Answer the following questions to help you get a true
idea of what types of colleges you should be considering:
What do you want to major in?
There are thousands of colleges and universities you can attend and
all of them have their own specializations. As a result, you should
choose a school that has a great reputation in your proposed major.
Of course, most college students change their major several times so
you should think ahead and come up with your top three majors because
you will most likely end up in one of those courses of study. Then,
find a college that has a good reputation and professors in all three.
This might seem difficult, but it is really not hard at all. You can
always transfer as well if you need to, but its best to try and plan
ahead.
What can you afford?
Unfortunately, budget does affect the university or college you choose.
Many students take out as many student loans as allowed and end up with
a degree and huge debt. It might be a better idea to choose a university
you can actually afford that has good degree programs rather than one
that is completely out of your budget. There are plenty of high ranked
affordable colleges and universities out there if you look. Additionally,
if you do have to take out student loans only take out what you need
to make ends meet rather than accepting all that is offered.
Where do you want to live?
You may have always dreamed of living at the beach, in the mountains,
or another state. If this is the case then choosing a university in
that location is a great opportunity to study and try out a new lifestyle.
Or, if you want to stay in your hometown that is fine as well. You just
need to know where you would like to study before you can make a decision.
What type of school?
Are you interested in a large school with thousands of students or would
you fit in better with a small college and small classes? Consider how
you would feel in both situations and the one you feel more comfortable
with is the best for you. Also, do you want to attend a school with
religious affiliations, that is predominately black, white, or Asian,
or a school with great athletic teams? All of these should be considered
as well.
Do you want to be involved in extracurricular activities,
clubs or fraternities?
If you have always dreamed of being involved in certain extracurricular
activities, clubs or fraternities then you should evaluate colleges
that offer the activities you are interested in. Doing this beforehand
will keep you from being disappointed.
Of course, there are other considerations you might want
to keep in mind such as cost of living, crime rate, public transportation,
and professor to student ratio among others. Once you evaluate all of
the above criterion and any other you might have then you will be well
on your way to start searching for colleges and universities worldwide.
The best place to start is the Internet and you will be able to quickly
compare various colleges and universities to your "want" list and add
those that are possibilities and ignore those that are not. Then, your
application process awaits but this is made even easier with the Internet
as well because you can simply apply online. Knowing what you want out
of a college is the best way to find the best college for you.
